Character Design – Security Guard

Hello everybody,

Today, I’m proud to post the first concept piece showing off the planned character design of the Security Guard for my game project!

Shopping Mall Security Guard was a character I designed part of a assignment at Victoria University involving my major/game project.

From sketch to the final product, here they are:

  • This is one badass security. If it wasn’t for the word on his chest I would think he is a cop. I like the concept though.

I’m curious – what program did you use to create the design? The process from start to finish is REALLY nice. I always have trouble myself getting the structure past the first stage (just a mess of sketches). I like how the 2nd part is all shaded in.. Is that a method you were taught in school? I usually go straight from sketch to line art.

There are a couple of steps I take and this is the more common one I follow, and it is what I learnt in University.
It is all created using Photoshop, Thanks 🙂

What version of Photoshop do you use? I last had Photoshop Elements 5.0…which is ANCIENT compared to the ones out now.
Do you think you could demonstrate a more thorough guide for the way you do this? It’s so neat! I’d love to see the mini steps for this too.

Hee – that security guard has a katana… I’m pretty sure that isn’t standard. Also this is for that game, right? So do you have like a story for it or are you going for a less burdened set up? Because I would love to know about this guy and his hangups. This guy has obviously seen some things.

Thanks for asking, and yes there is a story for this game, I have spent countless hours on detailing out ever inch of it and will release it if I get round to releasing the game.

    This is very cool!

although, I think you could’ve had a better and more stylized outcome! your first two frameworks are a very unique type of proportioning of the body, and I think if you followed that outline more, you could’ve come up with a more amazing piece. I think following that framework will also diminish the amount of off-proportionality in your final work.
Good job though! I also like the highlights on the pants 🙂

This is great, as for me I wouldn’t want to find that security anywhere, it looks really badass. His sunglasses give him personality.

Great to see the development stages and the final product. Did you get feedback at each stage?

I’ve always loved seeing other artists development stages too 🙂 and when I’m creating anything, I always seek feedback, I find myself creating better content when I get good blunt feedback.
